Voice Over Internet Protocol – VoIP

Voice Over Internet Protocol – VoIP

VoIP is Voice Over Internet Protocol. This is great tool for voicecommunication over long distance, over internet.

How VoIP works – Step by Step

VoIP is sending voice from one end, traveling through network and retrieving that voice signal on the other end.
  1. In a properly set VoIP system, a user speaks and this voice signal is captured by input device which is normal looking but an IP phone. This device is connected to or is an ATA(Analogue Telephone Adapter) in the system.
  2. ATA then transmits the signal to NETWORK.
  3. On the other side, at other user this signal is captured by other system.
  4. That digital signal is converted into analogue, i.e. voice that can be heard.

What is ATA?

All the best voip services needs this. ATA  long-form is Analogue Telephone Adapter. It’s a device that converts simple analogue voice message to digital signal that can be passed over network and convert back to analogue voice message.

For a Concept, What VoIP Takes For Minimum?

For short, a VoIP set up needs 4 things:
  1. 2 sets of Microphones and Speakers: These are used to send and receive the voice messages.
  2. Software to convert analogue to digital and vice verse: This software will take input from input devices like microphone and convert that signal to digital. On the other end, digital signal is processed back to analogue by the same software.
  3. High speed network, minimum like DSL: Network is connecting link. It will simply provide path for digital signal from one end to other.

Advantages of VoIP:

  • It does not need separate connection for Voice and Data.
  • Communication can be made literally for free or very low cost.
  • VoIP can handle more than one VoIP calls over same broadband network.
